When do braces make sense?
There are different views on when braces are really needed. There are many cases in which braces make sense, especially if you want straight teeth. But when are braces actually medically necessary? And when is appearance the main focus?
When is correcting the teeth medically necessary?
There are a number of reasons why correcting the position of the teeth is advisable as early as childhood. Here are the most important ones:
- The misalignment leads to speech problems, such as a lisp
- There are problems such as headaches or breathing difficulties that can be traced back to the misaligned jaw or teeth
- Chewing function is impaired
- Snoring due to the misalignment
- Increased risk of tooth decay because of crooked teeth and difficulty cleaning the gaps between them
- Increased risk of dental trauma due to protruding front teeth
Why orthodontic treatment always makes sense!
Often, it isn’t the reasons above that prompt a visit to the orthodontist at all, but the fact that people don’t like the way their teeth look. Many patients are already adults when they decide to have their teeth corrected. Crooked teeth can undermine self-confidence and affect your mental well-being.
If the wish for correction is mainly aesthetic, invisible braces are a great solution. This is possible at any age, so you are never “too old” for braces. With invisible aligners, your daily life isn’t disrupted and your appearance isn’t affected. This is often important for people who have to talk a lot in their job and everyday life. But quite apart from the aesthetic aspect, the clear, removable aligners are also simply particularly practical, efficient and comfortable.
