Braces: when is the right time for orthodontic treatment?
Who is orthodontic treatment suitable for? Braces aren’t just the privilege of youth. Corrections in adults are possible at any age and are even on trend.
One thing is clear: the earlier we detect misaligned teeth, the sooner we can determine the ideal time to start treatment.
Does my child need braces?
Parents should make a first check-up appointment for their children between the ages of 5 and 6. Crooked teeth don’t automatically mean that a child needs braces. We can’t always tell how the teeth of a child who is just changing from milk teeth to permanent teeth will be aligned. We therefore advise having the change of teeth checked by an experienced orthodontist sooner rather than later.
In some cases, early intervention with minimal treatment can spare a lengthy procedure later on. If in doubt, it is always better to get an expert opinion.
Will braces damage my teeth?
Orthodontic treatment does not damage the teeth. That the teeth also stay healthy during treatment is, of course, also down to thorough oral hygiene.
By brushing carefully, you can prevent tooth decay and gum inflammation in your child and in yourself.
Sometimes, in the course of orthodontic treatment, the root tips of individual teeth can shorten slightly. We call this root resorption. In most cases, however, these changes are too small to have any clinical effect. In very rare cases the orthodontist has to respond to it. This risk, however, is minimal.
