What can I eat and drink with invisible aligners?
How and what you can eat and drink while having your teeth corrected with invisible aligners is a question that comes up again and again.
Especially at the beginning, many patients worry that their daily life – and above all their eating habits – could suffer because of invisible braces. But this worry can be put to rest very quickly, because there really are no restrictions to fear.
Eating with invisible braces
With conventional fixed braces, eating is often a problem. Food debris tends to get caught in the metal brackets and has to be painstakingly removed. A very special oral hygiene routine becomes necessary. That isn’t the case with invisible braces. You can eat and drink anything. The aligners – the clear trays – can simply be taken out before every meal and put back in afterwards. This means a completely normal daily life is possible. Of course, you should brush your teeth before putting the aligners back in after eating. Oral hygiene is always important – during orthodontic treatment just as much as at any other time.
Take your braces out to drink?
Should you also take your braces out to drink? Water can of course be drunk at any time, even with invisible braces in your mouth. With sweetened drinks, or tea and coffee, things are a little different, however. Firstly, the drinks could discolour the aligners and make them look very unattractive. And secondly, sugar and other substances can collect in the aligners, attack the teeth and eventually cause tooth decay. That’s why it’s always advisable to take your invisible braces out before enjoying soft drinks, tea and coffee.
