Cost of braces: is it the same everywhere?
The cost of braces varies and, for children and adults alike, depends on a number of factors. The severity of the malocclusion has the greatest influence on the course of treatment and the costs – it determines the scope of the treatment, how long it takes and the type of braces.
In Austria, parents can apply for free braces for their children. Since 2015, the health insurance fund has covered the full cost of braces for young people up to the age of 18 who have a severe malocclusion.
What are the requirements for free braces?
- The treating dentist is a contracted orthodontic provider of the health insurance fund.
- The patient is under 18 years of age when treatment starts.
- The teeth are severely misaligned (= IOTN 4 or 5)
- No cosmetic braces (e.g. with white brackets) are used.
Cost of braces for adults
In general, it’s hard to say how much your treatment will cost. An orthodontist first has to determine what the treatment should look like.
With us, orthodontic treatment for adults costs between €5,480 (Eltz Lite) and €7,780 (Eltz Advanced), depending on the package — at a binding fixed price. This amount can be spread affordably over several years in up to 36 interest-free instalments, and if you opt for upfront payment you get a 4% discount.
If you’d like to request a contribution towards the costs for each treatment year, your health insurance fund and we will be happy to advise you. Adults who wish to claim benefits must apply to their health insurance fund for approval before treatment. The health insurance fund decides which costs you have to pay yourself and which it reimburses. Your exact share of the costs depends on your insurance fund.
