What pain during orthodontic treatment means
In general, correcting teeth with invisible aligners is almost painless. But especially in the initial phase of orthodontic treatment – no matter whether with aligners or metal brackets – mild pain in the jaw and teeth can occur.
This is absolutely no cause for concern. A short period of getting used to them is to be expected with any type of braces. With invisible aligners, the start is not as painful as with brackets.
Mild pain caused by braces
Many patients report initial pain when their teeth are corrected with fixed braces. The pain often returns when the orthodontist readjusts the braces. With aligners, initial pain occurs only rarely and is also less intense. With clear aligners, changing to a new aligner frequently means the pressure on the teeth is well distributed and minimal.
The feeling of pressure that can sometimes be felt on the first day after changing to a new aligner disappears within a very short time. This makes invisible braces a mostly completely pain-free method of orthodontic treatment.
Toothache: what the reasons could be
Of course, there can also be various reasons for toothache during orthodontic treatment. The (invisible) braces themselves are not always responsible for the discomfort. Other common reasons for toothache include:
- Tooth decay
- Exposed tooth necks (sensitive teeth)
- Gum inflammation
- Wisdom teeth
- Colds with inflamed sinuses
- and much more.
