Clear aligners: 4 things you should know!
These 4 things could be of interest to you if you’re currently wearing clear aligners or are planning to soon:
1. Braces and coffee – do they go together?
Water can of course be drunk at any time, even with your invisible braces in. With sweetened drinks or tea and coffee, however, things are a little different. Firstly, the drinks could discolour the aligners and make them look very unsightly. And secondly, sugar and other substances can collect in the aligners, attack the teeth and subsequently cause tooth decay. That’s why it’s always advisable to take out your invisible braces before enjoying fizzy drinks, tea and coffee.
2. No problems speaking
People often worry that wearing aligners could cause problems with speaking. However, this is hardly ever the case. We recommend that our patients talk a lot during the first few days with the aligners or read a book aloud to themselves. You then get used to speaking with the aligners very quickly.
3. The longer you wear them, the better
The aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day. That means you should really only take your aligners out to eat and brush your teeth, and put them straight back in afterwards.
4. Nobody will notice your braces
Even though it’s clear that the aligners are completely transparent, many people (especially young people) worry about whether others will notice their braces straight away. The answer is: no. Only in the rarest of cases are invisible braces noticed by strangers at all. So unless you actively point them out, they can’t be seen in everyday life.
