Invisible braces: fact or fiction? Common claims put to the test
Beautiful straight teeth are right at the top of patients’ wish lists when it comes to their appearance. It is perfect teeth that make your whole appearance come together into an attractive whole.
We use transparent plastic aligners to make the wish for a radiant smile come true for patients with mild to moderately misaligned teeth.
Traditional braces are mostly worn between the ages of 12 and 16; anyone who decides to have their teeth corrected later has to learn to cope with the appliance and with comments from friends. Invisible braces make this period of wear enormously easier.
“Fact or fiction?” those affected ask themselves uncertainly – do the transparent aligners on offer really deliver what orthodontists in Vienna promise?
Invisible aligners in Vienna – how does it work?
As part of the aligner method, clear plastic aligners are custom-made for the patient’s teeth. Once the treating specialist has made the diagnosis, the required aligner is produced using our modern 3D software.
Because the aligners are replaced regularly, the misalignment can be corrected step by step. In the upper and lower jaw, the aligners control the extent of the corrective movements and the desired timing.
Clear braces are even more flexible than conventional fixed braces and are barely visible in the mouth. A personal treatment plan makes it possible to work precisely on misalignments and, if necessary, to focus only on the individual teeth that are out of line.
On day 1 of treatment, the first aligner is fitted. Yes, you may feel a slight sense of things being “pushed together”. However, this feeling of pressure eases over time as we slowly correct the misalignment of the teeth.
On average, treatment with braces takes nine to eighteen months. Wearing a retainer at the end is essential so that the result lasts.
Two sides from the perspective of people wearing braces
Most patients are extremely satisfied with the result after treatment. In very rare cases, however, patients experience slight pain during the treatment process, comparable to a feeling of pressure.
The best results are achieved when the aligners are worn exactly as planned.
Advantages of invisible braces
- putting them in is hardly ever a problem
- taking them out is very easy
- custom-made aligners provide greater comfort
- the aligner can be removed to brush your teeth
- the plastic aligner is barely visible in the mouth
Correcting misaligned teeth – where are the limits?
Mild to moderate misalignments can almost always be corrected, but there are certainly rare misalignments that should not be treated with clear aligners.
The precise correction of individual teeth is what makes the aligner so effective for these misalignments. Whether aligners are the best option depends on your personal situation and the degree of misalignment.
Crooked teeth can easily become a burden for those affected. In professional or private life, people with a winning smile often have more opportunities than people with “buck teeth”.
Anyone who has more than once experienced other people laughing at their misaligned teeth wants to change the situation and wonders whether clear braces can put an end to their ordeal.
People with perfect teeth are envied. You don’t have to be a Hollywood star to long for evenly aligned teeth.
Losing weight with aligners – is it true?
The plastic aligner needs to be worn for up to 22 hours a day, with variations depending on the treatment plan. The aligner may be removed for eating.
For this reason, reports keep cropping up on the internet claiming that you can even lose weight thanks to aligners. We don’t want to endorse this claim here, but we do note that wearing aligners leads to more meal planning and less snacking.
Problems with aligners – are there any?
Staining drinks: Another sticking point is drinks that stain. We recommend avoiding them, as the aligner may otherwise become discoloured.
Lisping: There’s little need to worry about lisping because of the aligner, as patients get used to speaking with it after a while.
Cosmetics: Lipstick and aligners don’t always get along, however: if lipstick comes into contact with the aligners, they may become discoloured.
Invisible braces at a glance
In everyday office life, clear braces are barely visible, and colleagues often don’t even notice the new braces – only the wearer does. This is one of the biggest advantages, and one that goes down well with many people.
Laughing openly and without fear opens doors not only in your professional life but also in your private life. Only a few people have naturally perfect teeth.
However, misalignments can be corrected not only in adolescence but also later in life. The shiny silver wires of conventional braces are immediately noticeable when you show your teeth.
Most adults would much rather do without visible braces and therefore prefer the barely visible option if the degree of misalignment allows it.
Brief summary and final conclusion
This is the aligner method
- no metal wires or brackets needed
- removable at any time
- transparent and barely noticeable
- comfortable to wear
Braces to correct misaligned teeth are needed not only by some adolescents but also by adults. Anyone who doesn’t like wearing conventional, highly visible braces looks for alternatives.
In our experience, invisible braces are a sensible alternative to conventional braces. We hope we have been able to clear up some misconceptions.
